How Is Online Poker Different?

One of the main differences between online poker and live poker is proximity to your opponents. You are not sitting under the same roof as your fellow players. In fact, you might find that your tablemates would take many days, tanks of gas, or plane tickets to see live. Online poker makes it possible for people in remote locations to enjoy the same poker action as someone in Las Vegas, Atlantic City or any other venue that hosts live poker.

Because your fellow players are not in view, you will not be able to draw any inferences from observing body language or mannerisms that might give you a hunch as to how strong or weak your opponents’ hands are. These behaviors are known to poker players as ‘tells’. That is not to say there will not be any tells during the game, they just take a different form. Perhaps you notice when a player at the table has the nuts, he or she tends to check it every time and let someone else lead the betting. That is a tell. Being aware of your opponents betting patterns, the time they take to make a decision (do they use the ‘think tank’?), and how much they are betting (do they under-bet when they have a good hand?), are the true tells of the game.
