Online Poker Basics:

Before you begin playing, get yourself acquainted with the concepts of online poker and how they may differ from live poker.

Actions: There's no difference here. Your options when it's your turn to act will be the same as playing in a live poker room. When the action is to you, you can bet, call, raise, re-raise, check, or fold. The nice part about online poker is all the applicable options to your turn will display when it's your decision time. This makes the online environment unequivocally a better place to learn poker than a live poker room. There are no embarrassing questions you may be shy to pose to a table of players you're sitting eye to eye with in the real world. And if for example raising isn't an option, you won't see it as an option.

Advance checkboxes: before you do act, you likely have a very good inclination of what it is you're going to do prior to it being your turn to act. If you're in late position, you may have an idea early on in the betting action, but that is certainly subject to change as your turn nears. You may not be as keen to raise if there's a couple of raises to you.  But, if you're in early position, it's less likely that your initial impressions will change prior to your turn as there are less people to act in front of you, if anyone at all. If you know what you're going to do prior to it being your turn, and the checkboxes even give you contingent choices, you can select a predetermined action. This will speed the play of the game and you're fellow players will appreciate it.

Time to act: to ensure that the games are not  held up indefinitely in the event of someone not paying attention, each player has a finite time to act prior to their hand being involuntarily folded. A series of audio queues and visual time displays will help indicate that your time to act is elapsing. Be sure to make your decision and select it as an option prior to your hand being folded.

Following the action: there's a lot of information to absorb as a new online poker player, but most of it is fairly rudimentary and intuitive. The question to any query you might have, be it 'who's the chip leader in this tournament?' or 'what's the average chip stack?', are all answered in the lobby screen. You'll be able to see a wide range of statistics and information any time you like in the main tournament lobby, or in your specific tournament lobby if you are playing a tournament.
