Poker Etiquette:
If you are a reasonable and considerate person, you would say ‘thank you’ when someone holds the door for you. You also would not cut in line at a movie, or interrupt someone who is telling a story. Online poker has some conventions as well that when applied, shows your respect for other players and the game you are mutually enjoying. Following a few simple suggestions makes everyone’s online poker experience a fun one.
Slow play: Keeping the game flowing is the responsibility of all players. No one likes it when there is one player at the table who takes his full allotted time to make his decision each time it is his turn. All decisions cannot be that tough. Be sure to keep your play up to the pace of the game. Your fellow poker players appreciate it.
In-turn checkboxes: you can speed up the action at the table by using the in-turn checkboxes. What are these? The little checkboxes on the table screen that appear while the players preceding your turn are making their decisions. If you know you are going to fold, you can click this box and your hand will be folded the second it is your turn to act. As well, if you think your hand is fold-worthy but there has been no action to you, you can use the check/fold button. You might get to see a free turn card if no one bets, so you may as well have a free look if the other players let you.
Language: this is an obvious one. Although the software censors any obviously inappropriate language, you also do not want to disparage or demean your fellow players. Being abusive or rude is not a playing tactic, although some would suggest otherwise. It is just rude. Keep your anger under control and like your parents used to say to you: ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
Do not speak of a hand in progress: This is a big no-no. Play your hand out and let others play their hand out as well. Poker is a game of observations and deception. If you think you spot a bluff that a player is attempting on another player, it is certainly inappropriate to commentate and pontificate on the actions of another player. Poker is a game where you are playing other individuals. It is not appropriate to change that dynamic and act as an unsolicited coach to another player. It is equally inappropriate to state what you are holding. Whether it is a correct declaration of your hand or not, keep it to your inside voice.
